In these months, we are establishing a school, but this is not how it started. Over the past few years, we have provided a lot of education to refugees and other newcomers. And currently, we are still giving language lessons (Dutch and Arabic) almost daily. The Dutch lessons we give – in addition to our weekly language cafĂ© – to closed groups (in or for people in asylum centres).
This did get us thinking: couldn’t we offer more education to newcomers. There are many newcomers with a solid education who would like to develop further. And can’t newcomers provide education themselves? They are talented and would like to show it.
A second step was that we heard about the STEAM education concept. This concept focuses on technical education and the arts, which are precisely internationally oriented. So it is relatively easy for newcomers to connect to that. Moreover, technical education gives good opportunities for future work.
What we missed in STEAM is the connection with yourself. Especially as a newcomer, you have a story. And you didn’t come here in the first place to learn something about, say, physics, but to build a future. That is the genesis of MASTERS Education. The ‘R’ and ‘S’ stand for reflection and storytelling, i.e. connecting with yourself and expressing yourself. You can read more about MASTERS in our vision statement.
